Backing
Your choice of backing fabric is very important.

  • Keep in mind that the thread choice for the quilt top will be the same for the bottom thread. Machine quilting requires tiny back stitches to tie off. If your thread contrasts with your backing, these tie offs will be noticeable. Pattern fabrics instead of sold colors work best.
  • The backing should be a minimum of 6" wider and 6" longer than the top.
  • Remove selvages, making sure that the backing is square, edges straight and even.
  • Backing seam, if needed, should be 1/2 inch and pressed open. The backing must lay flat and be square to avoid puckers.

Quilt Top Preparation

  • Quilt top should be pressed with all seams ironed flat and facing in the desired direction.
    • All loose and stray threads should be clipped.
    • Top should be free of embellishments (buttons, charms, beads, lace).
    • Stay stitch 1/4 inch around the perimeter of the quilt top. This keeps the seams from "popping" and prevents stretching when attached to the machine.
